SARA TRIED TO STILL her thudding heart. What could she say? She was up to her neck in love with the man. Or at least, she'd never felt like this about anyone before, so if that was love, she'd fallen. Hard. And that was dangerous. If he found out she was a rebel, an insurgent, a terrorist. Was that what she was? She couldn't get past the people in the village, so many killed for nothing. They weren't even collateral damage. Was that what she was fighting for?
Jason greeted her with his usual patter. "How was your day?"
"Lovely. Fyn said to compliment you on the picnic basket." She took off her coat and flopped on the couch. "I urgently need to talk to Seidon and Isolde right now, this minute."
It took well over an hour before both of them agreed to an unscheduled meeting. Sara expected Seidon to be grumpy and he was. "What's so urgent that it couldn't wait? No success with your attempt on Malchor?"
"Malchor?" Oh yes, after the concert. She'd almost forgotten. "Nothing to do with me. It's not my style. Did you authorize a raid on the cereal factory at Edgerton?" She expected vehement denials, but he folded immediately.
"Yeah well. They made an honest mistake."
"Wait, what? A cereal factory?" Isolde said, her fairy avatar frowning.
Sara couldn't believe it. "An honest mistake? They slaughtered near on twenty people, Seidon. And that's just the deaths. What's honest about that?"
He stiffened. "They were supposed to hit the factory at Midmarsh. They took the wrong road. Edgerton looks similar, especially at night."
That was rubbish and he knew it. "We've got technology for that. Geographic locators. Remember them?"
He scowled. "Well, the technology didn't work. They had to find the place manually." His manner was brusque, dismissive.
It was true that reception could be patchy out there. They'd had to build towers to boost the signals from the comms satellites. But even so. "So, that makes it okay to shoot up innocent people, destroy their comms tower so they can't get help?"
"Will somebody please explain," Isolde shouted.
Sara gave her a brief, dot-point account of what had happened without mentioning Fyn and the Fleet intervention. As she'd expected, Isolde was horrified.
"Oh Seidon. That's terrible. And you didn't think to discuss this raid with us?"
He brushed the remark off with a sweep of his arm. "Military operations are not your problem."
He was doing it again, telling the two women their input was not required. "I think all of this is our problem, Seidon," Isolde said. "We're supposed to be helping the people of Anaris not brutalizing them."
"It was a mistake. I'm sorry."
He said the words, but Sara wasn't convinced. This was one of the times Sara regretted using avatars. She would love to see the man's body language.
He scowled. "I'll talk to my people. Is that all? I have things to do."
Sara exchanged a look with Isolde. They needed to talk.
"Of course." Isolde poked a finger at him. "But after you've talked to your people, we want answers.
